A METHOD FOR CALCULATING NEUTRON AGE,

Abstract

This report describes a method for calculatingneutron age values for any homogeneous, nonmultiplying medium. The method accounts for the effects of both inelastic and anisotropic neutron scattering. In the derivation of the method, Fourier transform techniques are used to develop, from the multi-group diffusion model, two simple recursive formulas which generate group average neutron age. The group average neutron ages are then used to estimate the age as a continuous function of lethargy. The method is applied tocompute the age to indium resonance from a U-235 fission source in some sample moderators (Be, BeO, C, C12H10, and H2O). The quality of the results indicates that the method should provide good values of neutron age for use in reactordesign calculations. The prime advantage of the method is the ease with which the age calculations can be made. In many applications, hand calculations would be possible. (Author)
