IMPROVED MAGNETIC MATERIALS.

Abstract

In the permanent magnet phase of the program efforts were initiated to obtain a fine grain size after solution treatment of the 3% Bebalance iron alloy and property measurements made on the 30% Be-balance iron alloy indicate a saturation of approximately 5000 gauss. A newalloy was obtained for continuation of thequench-stress experiments. In the soft magnetphase of the program the efforts were concentrated on attempts to determine the structrue existing at various temperatures in the 7.38% Silicon iron-silicon alloy. Preliminary evidence indicates the possible existence of a two phase structure in this alloy. Further work, including studies of higher silicon alloys, is being under-taken to confirm or refute this observation. An inert atmosphere system was added to the magnetostriction equipment and magnetostriction measurements on the 50 iron-50 cobalt alloy have been made to 75 C. Data for room temperatures and 75 C are reported. (Author)
