RESEARCH ON SEMICONDUCTOR TRANSPORT.
Abstract
Research was concerned with the exploration of interaction of phonons (lattice vibrations) with charge carriers and effects closely related to these. The first major accomplishment was the discovery of the transmitted phonon drag in silicon npn-structures. The transmitted phonon drag was used to explore a variety of scattering phenomena, all in silicon. The following topics are discussed: A simplified model for phonon scattering by grain boundaries; Phonon mean free path in silicon between 77 and 250K; Measurement of phonon-phonon scattering in silicon at 4.2K; Design of an experiment and preliminary measurements aimed at phonon focussing and phonon diffraction in silicon; Acoustic amplification of relevant thermal phonons.
