DEVELOPMENT OF MILLIMETER AND SUBMILLIMETER MASER DEVICES.
Abstract
Development of millimeter and submillimeter devices has continued. During this period the following work has been done. Operation of a maser using harmonic coupling to establish inversion, studies of new materials, establishing a test facility at Wright Field, relaxation rate measurements for ferric ions in titanium dioxide and 150 gc maser pumping configurations. A harmonic maser was operated as an oscillator at a frequency of 101.05 gc with a pumping frequency of 70.80 gc. This is the highest frequency maser reported to date and represents a significant advancement particularly since the pump frequency is so much less than the maser oscillator frequency. A study of two promising materials; i.e., zinc tungstate and calcium tungstate was begun during this period so that the maser techniques developed for rutile masers might be evaluated in the other materials. The assembly of the test facility at Wright Field proceeded as expected with preliminary testing of the device initiated during this period. (Author)
