RESEARCH ON THE THERMAL PROPERTIES OF ZIRCONIA.

Abstract

Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity and elasticity measurements, over a range of temperatures, were made for zirconia bodies modified by additions of MgO, Al2O3, CeO2, CaO, Ti, and Zr. The effects of the additives on these thermal properties of zirconia were demonstrated. Specimens of unstabilized monoclinic zirconia were prepared by hot pressing. The elastic moduli of these specimens were measured by a sonic method in the temperature range 25 to 1000 C. Application of mathematical expressions developed for the porosity dependence of elastic modulus of refractory oxides led to the calculation of Young's and shear moduli at zero porosity of this material in the specified temperature range.
