VARACTOR FREQUENCY MODULATION OF THE SUPPORTED DRIFT TUBE KLYSTRON,
Abstract
An experimental study was conducted to determine the feasibility of frequency modulating an S band, two cavity klystron by means of a veractor coupled to the oscillator cavity. Capacitance relationships, resistance, figures of merit, and the equivalent circuit of the varactor are presented along with varactor selection and modulation circuit design. Frequency and modulation measurement techniques are developed. Static and modulation tests are performed with two varactor types at two degrees of coupling. Data includes frequency deviations, power reductions, nonlinearity, and optimum bias points. An r-f induced varactor current phenomena is observed and discussed. Results indicate possible utilization of this method of modulation. (Author)
