PROPAGATION OF ELASTIC AND PLASTIC STRAIN PULSES IN BOUNDED SOLIDS.

Abstract

The general purpose of the program was to discover by experiment how bounded solids behave when subjected to time-dependent surface loads and to develop theoretical methods for predicting the observed behavior. In nearly all tests the solid was in the form of a long circular cylinder and the time-varying load was applied to one end, with the result that a strain pulse propagated along the bar away from the stressed end. Although dispersion of this pulse for various conditions of loading and with different types of solid was the subject of principal interest, attention was also given to the electric field which accompanies the strain pulse as it propagates through a metal.
