HEAT CAPACITY OF A ALPHA-NISO4 6H2O BETWEEN 1 AND 20 K. ELECTRONIC ENERGY LEVELS OF THE NI++ ION,

Abstract

In this paper we describe the results of measurements of the heat capacity of alpha-NiSO4 6H2O between 1 and 20 K. The heat capacity curve is found to have the Schottky form and from the data the separation in energy of the three spin states is calculated. The crystal structure of alpha-NiSO4 6H2O has four Ni ions per unit cell and from the structural data and the measurements of the magnetic anisotropy the orientation of the principal magnetic axes of the nickel ions in the crystal are determined.
