EVALUATION OF THE GROUND-TO-AIR BALLOON STATION RECOVERY SYSTEM. PHASE II - WITH C-47 TYPE AIRCRAFT,

Abstract

The All American Engineering Company's GroundTo-Air Balloon Station Recovery System, utilizing a C-47 type aircraft, was evaluated for possible use in special air warfare. Seventeen missions were flown in this evaluation, using both the pillow and Aerokite balloon stations. Ten missions resulted in good loop engagements and eight of these engagements resulted in successful pickups and recoveries. It is concluded that the reliability of the system is unacceptable when installed in the C-47 type aircraft due to the limited flight pickup envelope available and movement of the balloon during variable or gusty wind conditions.
