THE MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF THE HEUSLER ALLOYS.

Abstract

The report gives the results of magnetic and crystallographic investigations on the bodycentred cubic heusler alloys of the type Cu2MnX. The alloys Cu2MnA1, Cu2MnSn and Cu2MnIn were prepared by melting and quenching from the high temperature b.c.c. phase at 650 C, 625 C and 535 C respectively, followed by annealing for some days. Cu2MnSb is not now considered to be a Heusler alloya and the antiferromagnetism is probably due to the presence of the alloy DuMnSb. The alloys Cu2MnBi and Cu2MnGe previously reported as Heusler phase are found to be polyphase. Au2MnSn was found to be polyphase. The results are discussed in the light of theories put forward by Zener, Yosida and Kasuya, and it is shown that a qualitative explanation of the properties of the ordered Heusler alloys can be given.
