RESEARCH ON SOLID STATE NOISE DEVICES.

Abstract

Efforts were concentrated on two problems: (1) the investigation of the basic mechanisms of avalanche breakdown and (2) their application to the generation of high amplitude white noise with considerable temperature independence. A model for the electrical behavior of microplasmas is described containing four independent parameters. This model is extended to uniform avalanche breakdown. An influence of traps within the space charge layer of a junction on breakdown voltage and pulse rate has been found. A further contribution to the pulse rate is shown to arise from an interaction between various microplasmas. For high amplitude noise generation uniform avalanche diodes are superior to microplasma devices. Two methods to reduce the temperature dependence of the noise output are described. (Author)
