GROWTH AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS OF RARE EARTH COMPOUNDS.
Abstract
Work was largely confined to the preparation of the rare earth compounds and the construction of a cryostat for electrical measurements at low temperatures. Several efficient processes were found to yield pure homogeneous compounds according to the specified stoichiometries. For the growth of single crystals of europium monochalcogenides (EuS, EuSe, and EuTe), the iodine transport method has proved to be especially attractive. Preliminary results have also demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining single-crystal thin-films of EuS through the mechanism of epitaxial overgrowth. For electrical resistance measurements at temperatures ranging from 1.2 to 300 K, a cryostat equipped with a vacuum-tight resistance probe was built and tested. (Author)
