MEASUREMENTS OF THE INTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUPERCRITICAL OPERATION OF THE POSITIVE COLUMN,

Abstract

The helical instability of the positive column in a longitudinal magnetic field has been observed by measuring the internal magnetic field of the positive column. The measurements were perfromed in helium with discharge tubes which had radii of 2.35 cm, 3.54 cm and 4.75 cm and lengths of 1.37 meters. The measurements of the internal magnetic field of the positive column were made as a function of applied magnetic field, gas pressure, and D.C. discharge current. It was found that thre was good agreement between these results and the theory of the helical instability of the positive column in a longitudinal magnetic field. (Author)
