Abstract

The Waterways Experiment Station laboratory complex is the principal research, testing and development facility of the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army. It is engaged in research and engineering investigations in the scientific fields of hydraulics, soil mechanics, concrete, mobility of military vehicles, nuclear weapons effects, and flexible pavement design. Through basic and applied research in these and related fields, the development of methods and techniques, and the testing of materials and equipment, it assists in accomplishment of both the civil works and military missions of the Corps of Engineers. In addition to laboratory and field investigations, the Waterways Experiment Station provides consulting services in its specialized fields of competence, as well as a central scientific reference service.
