COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF REGIONAL AND GENERAL ANESTHESIA.
Abstract
This report concerns a comprehensive study of 44 patients under the influence of: (a) halothane anesthesia; (b) subarachnoid block; and (c) extra-dural block. In the halothane group, studies were done: (1) prior to the anesthetic; (2) during light anesthesia; (3) during deep anesthesia; (4) during operation; and (5) after termination of the anesthetic. In patients with subarachnoid or extradural block, studies were carried out during: (1) preanesthetic period; (2) 15 to 30 minutes after the establishment of anesthesia to the 10th thoracic dermatome; (3) 15 to 30 minutes after the establishment of anesthesia to the 5th thoracic dermatome; (4) after the administration of vasopressor (if required); and (5) after disappearance of the anesthetic. The following parameters were measured: Cardiovascular, Respiratory parameters, renal-hepatic functions and Blood chemistry. The results indicate that light inhalation anesthesia with halothane and low subarachnoid block have insignificant effects on cardiovascular function, pulmonary function, hepatic and renal function, and blood chemistry deep halothane anesthesia and high subarachnoid block markedly decrease cardiovascular function, but have insignificant effect on pulmonary function.
