A TORPEDO CAPTIVE-TEST FACILITY FOR SHALLOW AND DEEP OPERATION,

Abstract

A simple and inexpensive torpedo captive-test facility was developed. The facility consisted of a steel frame in which the assembled torpedo was suspended by soft spring mounts. The propeller shafts were fitted with flat drag disks that absorbed the required power while eliminating forward thrust. The assembly was operated on the bottom of a shallow tank, and later was suspended from a cable for deep testing at sea. In both modes, the facility satisfactorily simulated normal operating conditions in tests of the Torpedo Mk 46 Mod 0 propulsion system. (Author)
