Abstract

In an effort towards the understanding of deformation bands, single crystals of aluminum were grown oriented for single slip, in the form of wavy ribbons. Since the bands were to be studied in all phases of development, it was necessary to search for methods for the early detection and quantitative examination of deformation bands. Experiments in this direction, employing the Berg-Barrett x-ray method were begun. Interesting results on polygonization in band Al single crystals were obtained. Contrary to expectations, polygonization behavior strongly depends on the relative position of any given volume element in a specimen. A noteworthy observation was that the angular misorientation associated with a wall does not ordinarily change on annealing.
