CATALYSIS OF OXYGEN ATOM RECOMBINATION,

Abstract

A search has been made for materials which could act as effective catalysts for oxygen atom recombination. Ten gases have been examined for this effect in the temperature range 297 K to 753 K over a pressure interval of 0.2 mm to 2.0 mm Hg. No effective catalysts were discovered among the following gases: boron trifluoride, carbon dioxide, carbon tetrafluoride, sulfur hexafluoride, carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, carbon monoxide, monomethylamine, stannic chloride and sulfur dioxide. A few solids were tested and of these graphite exhibited interesting catalytic activity. An indication of its possible effectiveness was given by calculating the ratio of the rate loss of oxygen atoms in its presence to that in its absence. The upper limit to this ratio was found to be 2500 at 10 to the -4th power atmosphere and 300 K. (Author)
