HYDROFOIL LIFT IN HEAD SEAS

Abstract

The results of the present investigation show that the measured lift response of finite aspect ratio hydrofoils in regular head seas is linearly related to the measured wave input. Thus, spectral theory can be used with gust response operators as well as wave height spectra to predict the statistical character of the unsteady lift on finite aspect ratio hydrofoils in irregular head seas. It is anticipated that accurate theoretical predictions of the lift spectra for a finite aspect ratio hydroil in irregular head seas can be obtained using an exact lifting surface theory to compute the gust response operator.
