SPECTROSCOPIC MEASUREMENTS ON MAGNETICALLY COMPRESSED HIGH TEMPERATURE PLASMAS,

Abstract

A critical investigation of the applicability of Boltzmann factors and Saha equations to a moving inhomogeneous plasma was carried out. Deviations from local thermal equilibrium are discussed and approximate corrections are presented. Time resolved spectroscopic measurements in the visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum and high speed photography have been performed on the magnetic compression phase of a preionized plasma with reverse trapped magnetic field in a straight cylindrical single turn coil. The experimental results are compared to predictions as obtained by machine calculations on the basis of a magneto-hydrodynamic theory in the twofluid model. (Author)
