RADAR HURRICANE RESEARCH.
Abstract
An attempt is made to determine the optimum parameters for air borne weather reconnaissance radars which might possibly be used on U S Weather Bureau Research Flight Facility aircraft in various conditions of flight. Characteristics of a combined 5-cm and 3-cm radar, which seem to be optimum for the existing as well as future weather reconnaissance data gathering missions, are described. Some other desirable additions, such as receiver characteristics which provide for gathering more quantitative radar weather data and for the optimum presentation of weather in the presence of ground and sea clutter on the radarscope, are also described. In addition, analysis of the echo motion about Hurricane Donna on 9 and 10 September 1960 was continued. It is found that significant differences in echo motion exist between the echoes which are observed over land and over water, and also between those observed during the night-time and day-time periods. The dependence of echo speed on crossing angle was proven realistic in the Donna echo data. When the dependence of echo motion on height was studied by using height as a function of range from radar as punched in the Donna I B M cards, results were inconclusive. (Author)
