AN ABSTRACT VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLE WITH APPLICATIONS IN MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS,

Abstract

An abstract variational principle is given which is appropriate to a wide class of linear problems. This principle yields, as special cases, the usual variational principles of mathematical physics and, in addition, may be used to deduce many new results. For the purpose of illustration the variational form of Dirichlet's principle is used and there is derived apparently new variational principles for the initial value problems associated with the wave and heat conduction equations.
