THE CONTAMINATION OF MILK BY RADIONUCLIDES IN FALLOUT,

Abstract

The major parameters that influence the uptake and assimilation of radionuclides in fallout by animals foraging on pastures are discussed. Equations for a radionuclide assimilation model for the cow and for the concentration of radionuclides in milk are presented, and values of the equation parameters for Sr-89, Sr-90, Te-132, and I-131 are derived from available reported data. The use of the model is illustrated by a computation of the concentrations of Sr-89, Sr-90, and I-131 in milk and the absorbed dose in humans from consumption of the milk following the contamination of pastures by fallout from an assumed 15-MT yield land surface detonation.
