SYNTHESIS OF LOW TEMPERATURE OIL RESISTANT URETHANE ELASTOMERS.

Abstract

The preparation of polyether urethane elastomers and the effect of variation in formulation and processing on their properties are described. Special attention is given to low temperature flexibility and to oil resistance. A statistically designed program was run investigating several variables at two levels, including types and concentrations of polyol, diamine and diisocyanate which served as a guide in selecting the diisocyanate and diamine to be used for the preparation and evaluation of urethane elastomers based on various polyethers. Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and ortho dichlorobenzidine (DCB) were chosen, based on properties and ease of fabrication into elastomers. The more significant results of the program (including the excellent resistance to oven aging at 100 degrees C) are summarized. (Author,modified-PL).
