STUDY OF TOXIC GASES FROM PROPELLANT DEVICES AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE M80, XM87, XM88, AND XM89 INITIATORS,
Abstract
New test parameters that pertained to human tolerances in capsule environments are being developed to meet novel requirements for initiators developed for use in escape capsules. In apparatus was designed and fabricated to measure the leakage rate of the gaseous products of combustion from initiators, to determine the total amount of gas generated, to record the peak pressure, and to provide facilities for the collection of samples for gas analysis. The M9, M27, M 51 and M54 initiators were modified by providing closer assembly tolerances and improved seals to reduce toxic gas leakage to acceptable levels. Initiator designations were changed to M80, XM87, XM88 and XM89 and test procedures were established to provide for qualification of each type. The necessary design requirements for leak-proof initiators should be established and the development of propellant charges of reduced toxicity be undertaken. Combustion products of PAD used in occupied enclosures should be analyzed. (Author)
