INVESTIGATION OF BONDING IN OXIDE-FIBER (WHISKER) REINFORCED METALS.

Abstract

Sessile drop experiments were conducted on Ni, Ni-Ti and Ni-Cr compositions and alpha-Al2O3 single crystal plaques. The pure nickel drops reached equilibrium within 5 to 15 minutes after melting, while the contact angles of Ni-Ti and Ni-Cr drops continued to decrease with increasing time. In all cases, the addition of Ti and Cr decreased significantly the contact angles. In order to evalsate the adhesion between the solidified drops and the alpha-Al2O3 plaques, 'shear' tests were conducted. Fracture always occurred in the plaque, and examination of the interfacial region showed that the shear tests were unable to separate completely the alpha-Al2O3 from the Ni. The greatest 'shear' strength measured was 15,00 psi. The addition of Ti and Cr contributed significantly to the wetting of the Ni to the alpha-Al2O3. (Author)
