THE STRUCTURE OF THUNDERSTORM SHOWERS, ACCORDING TO DATA ON THE INTENSITY DISTRIBUTION OF RADARECHOES WITH HEIGHT (STRUKTURA GROZOVYKH ZLYV ZA DANYMY PRO ROZPODYL INTENSIVNOSTI RADIOLUNY Z VYSOTOIU),

Abstract

The question of the physical nature of the change in the intensity of radarechoes with height in thundershowers, from the ground to the level of reflectivity maximum is examined. Direct measurements of echo intensity with height, as expressed by radar reflectivity, showed that the echo intensity changes considerably from the level of maximum reflectivity, somewhere within the cloud, to the ground. It was concluded that the melting of hailstones during their fall is responsible for the vertical distribution of radar reflectivity. (Author)
