INVESTIGATION OF UNCONVENTIONAL BEARINGS.

Abstract

The investigation of unconventional approaches to the problem of providing a dynamic support in an aerospace environment is the object of this research contract. Current work by other investigators and original concepts and their potential are discussed. The report covers solid, liquid, gaseous and metallic lubricants, rolling element, journal and gas bearings, electric and acoustic force field supports, seals, cooling and means of preserving lubricants and surfaces. Several systems utilizing a combination of operating principles or devices are proposed which meet the aerospace environmental conditions. One system, the gas bearing with molecular pump seal is recommended as most likely of success. An extensive bibliography is included. (Author)
