TRACKING MECHANISMS AND COUPLINGS FOR A CARGO RESUPPLY TRAIN CONCEPT: PHASE IIB. LATERAL STABILITY OF TRAILER TRAINS.
Abstract
Presented is an analytical investigation of the lateral-directional stability of train-type vehicles. A three-unit train is considered in order to develop and define the performance parameters of train-type vehicles for operational lateral stability. AOLSO, THE EQUATIONS OF MOTION FOR A TRAILER TRAIN CONSISTING OF ANY NUMBER OF INDIVIDUAL TRAILER UNITS ARE FORMULATED. This analysis is first applied to obtain the response curves for a trailer train composed of a lead unit and nine identical trailers. Next, a six-unit train configuration is investigated and discussed as a solution which appears to be promising for further experimental investigation. Finally, the analysis is applied to the thirteen-unit Army Overland Train Mark II to determine its dynamic behavior for different forward speeds. A comparison of these analytical results, with actual field test observations, when the latter become available, should be important in evaluating the validity of the theoretical procedures. (Author)
