THE DETERMINATION OF THE WORLD-WIDE EFFECTIVE RECOMBINATION COEFFICIENT OF THE E-REGION,

Abstract

The effective recombination coefficient of the E region is evaluated at the height of the maximum on a world wide basis near noon. This is accomplished using the comparison and relaxation methods in conjunction with critical E frequency data for the years 1957 through 1959. It was found that the effective recombination coefficient calculated in this way varied considerably with latitude and season. It is shown that the effects of electron drift and changes in relative ion concentration will be important in understanding this variation. (Author)
