THE USE OF INFRARED ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY IN RESEARCH ON HAFNIA AND ZIRCONIA.

Abstract

Infrared spectra are shown for monoclinic ZrO2 and HfO2 and cubic stabilized ZrO2 and HfO2. Nine to ten bands in the region 800 to 222/cm are reported for the monoclinic modification of each, while the stabilized cubic phases show only one broad band over the same fre8uency range. Both cubic and monoclinic ZrO2 spectra are qualitatively similar to corresponding phases in HfO2, but small differences in band position and shape make identification and separation possible in the monoclinic phase of these compounds. The spectrum of tetragonal ZrO2 (CeO2 stabilized) is identical to spectra obtained from cubic ZrO2 samples. The strong dependence of the infrared spectrum on structure and lattice impurities is shown in the spectrum of a monoclinic specimen prepared by heating a low temperature stabilized sample at 800 C.
