PILOT PRODUCTION AND EVALUATION OF TANTALUM ALLOY SHEET.

Abstract

The evaluation of T-222 (Ta-9.6W-2.4Hf-0.01C) sheet was continued. Duplicate tensile tests of recrystallized and stress-relieved sheet were conducted in the temperature range 1800 to 3500F. The excellent high temperature strength of T-222 reported previously was confirmed. Stress rupture properties at 2400 and 3000 F were established. Aging studies to determine optimum thermal and mechanical treatments for improved high temperature tensile strength were initiated. Electron microscopy and phase identification studies are being conducted to correlate mechanical properties with structure. The processing of an additional 3 in. diameter ingot of T-222 and several smaller ingots of experimental compositions was also initiated. (Author)
