LOW VELOCITY MAGNETIC DATA READOUT.

Abstract

Presented is wor performed during a twelve month study program. Purpose of the study was investigation of low-velocity magnetic data readout and techniques for magnetic tape digital recording and playback over a wide speed range. Included are a summary of program requirements and the method of approach adopted by the contractor using standard components to the maximum possible extent and the simplest possible design for the feasibility equipment. Design of the singlechannel feasibility equipment is illustrated and described in detail. The study and test program included extensive testing of the flux-responsive head, and playback of digital signals in both flux-responsive and conventional modes. Results have proved the feasibility of recording and playback over a speed range of 7500 to 1 and compatibility with standard teletype signals. The report concludes with recommendations for additional testing, and modification of the feasibility equipment for five-channel operation. (Author)
