SOLID STATE RESEARCH OF THE APPLIED PHYSICS DEPARTMENT FOR THE YEAR 1962.

Abstract

The materials preparation program has succeeded in growing high quality single crystals of both PbTe and SnTe, and in addition a method has been developed for varying the stoichiometry over a large range. Also single crystal films of PbS have been grown that show the characteristic of bulk material. Band structure work emphasizes the effective masses of electrons based upon optical and thermoelectric masureents. Considerable emphasis has been placed upon the relationship between the magnetization and elastic properties of the crystal lattice with particular concern directed towards magnetostriction in garnet materials. The unsymmetrical oxygen position found in fused SiO2 has now been observed in the glasses Ge203 and B203. Neutron diffraction studies of MnF2 have shown, for the first time, the direct observation of covalently bonded electrons. The intermetallic phase Ti2Ni reversible reaction TiNi reversible reaction TiNi3 has been examined in considerable further detail. (Author)
