DESIGN PLAN FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A CONTINUOUSLY SCANNING ANALYZER,

Abstract

The work under this contract deals mainly with the study and investigation of the problems of high frequency spectrum activity monitoring and/or search requirements, and the development of techniques to solve these problems. This report covers a portion of the continuously scanning analyzer being constructed for the activity monitor. A future TDR will describe areas not covered in this report. This analyzer operates like a scanning receiver in conjunction with a narrow band IF amplifier to analyze a band of frequencies. However, the analyzer is not limited to the resolution of a panoramic receiver, since it uses the equivalent of a chirp filter instead of a simple narrow band IF filter. The chirp filter is simulated by a stored reference cross-correlator preceded by a digital time compressor. The reference for the cross-correlator is a local oscillator whose sweeping speed is equal to the sweeping speed of the input oscillator times the square of the time compression ratio. (Author)
