THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF DEFENSE, STRATEGY AND LOGISTICS,

Abstract

Implications for future defense transportation requirements: future defense transportation requirements may need consideration of prospective changes in defense strategy and logistics; a national policy of maintaining options by which the United States can respond in any one of several ways in the face of a particular threat; the goal must be to develop a transportation system that can accept unexpected workloads and respond rapidly; new management control techniques are affecting all sectors of our economy; new analysis capabilities are allowing organizations to rationalize their operations; increased ability to plan and control operations means that organizations are tending to substitute modern communications, high-speed transportation, and tighter management, for inventories of expensive resources -- both materiel and personnel.
