TESTS ON CLAY SUBSOILS BENEATH STATICALLY AND DYNAMICALLY LOADED SPREAD FOOTINGS,

Abstract

It is concluded that this clay, when tested dynamically, shows a strength increase most likely due to strain rate effects. A dynamic strength of about 1.6 times the static strength was obtained. Previous tests on sand indicate a smaller strain rate effect. These observations agree with the results of strain rate effects. It is apparent that the consistency of the clay has an effect on the rise time of a dynamic load as well as the rebound of the footing as the load goes to zero. Clays of a softer consistency show longer rise times and greater footing rebound. The tests in which the footing rotated, show that eccentricity of loads is a critical factor when performing tests of this type. (Author)
