A STUDY OF THE NATURAL SPIN ORBITALS OF ATOMS IN LS-, JJ- AND INTERMEDIATE COUPLING,

Abstract

Properties of the first order density matrix gamma for an N electron system are studied. A general sufficient criterion is given to find symmetry properties of gamma from those of the system state vector. These results are applied to atoms in LS, jj and intermediate coupling. The even degeneracy of the eigenvalues of gamma, due to time reversal invariance, is proved. The p superscript 2 configuration is studied as a simple example, using a suitable perturbation treatment and the invariance of this system under rotation about an axis, coordinates inversion and time reversal.
