CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STUDY OF MEMBRANE DEFORMATIONS OF SHELLS,

Abstract

The membrane deformations is determined for shallow shells having a positive Gaussian curvature, with the results applied to the elliptical and revolution paraboloid; also, the well-known graphic-analytical method of Mohl used in the calculation of sagitta of a beam subjected to bending, is discussed. The applicability limits of the membrane theory is specified and the real variation of the deformations obtained by applying the bending theory. The membrane stresses in a statically indeterminate case of support are determined. The basic equations are given for the general case of high domes; simpler results can be obtained in the case of flattened shallow shells; thus it is possible to obtain explicit results. (Author)
