DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE SPACE-CHARGEFOCUSED, SUPPORTED-DRIFT-TUBE KLYSTRON OSCILLATOR,

Abstract

The theory of the floating-drift-tube klystron, applicable also to the supported-drift-tube case, is reviewed. The formulas are combined with the conditions for free space charge flow, and design considerations for tubes with maximum efficiency are derived. Depressed collector operation is analyzed and the ultimate efficiency is calculated. Though the optimum efficiency before collector potential depression depends on drift tube length, gap-capacitance ratio and mode number, the ultimate efficiency becomes independent of these quantities and, for optimum bunching parameter, is only proportional to the coupling coefficient at the second gap.
