FIRST CONGRESS ON THE INFORMATION SYSTEM SCIENCES, SESSION 8: INTELLIGENT AUTOMATA.

Abstract

The three fields are briefly defined, and nearand middle-distant views of the future are taken to point out common needs and problems. Research in artificial intelligence is described as ''pure'' and academic, while the researchers in military intelligence and command and control are in a hurry for practical applications. The fields are examined in relation to very large and complex computer programs which require large staffs, usually working over a long time, to prepare a computer to do quickly what many people could do in a long time. Time-sharing and space-sharing concepts, permitting the use of a computer by a number of people during the same period to reduce costs and attain higher speed, are explained. Heuristic power is discussed in the light of developing it in computers through advanced multi-user systems or amplifying it in humans through interactions with the machines. Digital and analog computers are compared and problem solving techniques are covered. Predictions are made about results of research in machine decision-making and in the processing and translation of languages by computers. (Author)
