HIGH-TEMPERATURE ANTENNA INVESTIGATION AND DEVELOPMENT.
Abstract
This report summarizes the program investigating antenna designs suitable for use at temperatures up to 2000 F. Open-waveguide (slot) antennas are described and it is proposed to fabricate two such designs. One type will be made of niobium with a beryllium window. The other type will be made of fused quartz and will be platinum plated. A scimitar antenna mounted on a rigid, stainlesssteel coaxial feed was made. It was heated to 1575 F to help evaluate the probable heat conduction along the inner conductor. A metal heat sink near the input end of the coaxial line provided an effective means of keeping both the inner and outer conductors at about 100 F. The experimental work conducted, and the reports of other organizations, indicate that the proposed antenna designs are feasible. Although the test environment of 2000 F has been partially achieved, a number of additional improved heating methods have been identified and offer promise to produce the desired thermal environment.
