NIGHT ILLUMINATION SYSTEM FOR THE RF-101.

Abstract

Flight testing is reported of a prototype night illumination subsystem based on the use of electronic flash techniques for internal installation in an RF-101 aircraft. The unit is to demonstrate feasibility and capability of CAI's approach to the night illumination problem and is considered as a flight test model rather than a prototype. It is required to provide a combined flash capability in excess of 3000 watt seconds, using a power supply composed of nickel cadmium batteries capable of providing power for 600 maximum energy flashes before recharge. The complete unit is to be mounted in a split vertical camera bay of an RF-101 with the lamp assemblies fitted to a modified bay door. The installation will provide for the necessary camera shutter synchronization and flash subsystem control. (Author)
