COMPUTATION OF ATMOSPHERIC REFRACTIVITY ON THE USAF SKEW T, LOG P DIAGRAM,

Abstract

The parameters needed to compute the refractive index and also the parameters which are most readily available to the practicing meteorologist are pressure, temperature, and dew point. In the USAF the vertical distribution of these quantities is recorded and displayed on the Skew T, Log P Diagram (AWS WPC 9-16) (1). A grid is presented for the USAF Skew T, Log P Diagram by means of which the refractivity can be read directly from the traces of temperature and dew point entered on the diagram. In this manner the refractive index can be evaluated directly from the plotted sounding without the use of an external nomogram and the necessary height values can be entered. The accuracy and range of the computations should cover most applications of AWS detachments. (Author)
