RESEARCH ON NOISE IN CROSSED-FIELD GUNS.

Abstract

The expression for the diocotron gain in the gun region of a short Kino gun is derived. It is found that by selecting the appropriate values of the operating parameters, the noise growth in the gun region can be significantly reduced. The design of an experimental S-band crossed-field forward wave amplifier using a split-folded waveguide as the delay line is discussed. The de terminantal equation for accelerating crossedfield beams is derived, and the application of the results expected from solving this equation to the use of a noise transducer for reducing noise figure value is discussed. A procedure for determining the space-charge effects for cycloiding beams (of small cycloids) is discussed. The derivation of the formula for noise figure based upon three and five waves excitation in the interaction region is discussed. The use of a finite drift region before the interaction region for studying the variation (minima and maxima) of the fluctuations corresponding to the velocity and current density components is discussed.
