DEVELOPMENT OF A 1200 DEGREES F RADOME.

Abstract

The work reported includes investigation of protective coatings for the fibrous reinforcement, fabric impregnation and preparation of a storable prepreg material, an evaluation of reinforcements and evaluation of high temperature coating materials for sealing the radome against moisture. The initial measurements of electrical, mechanical, thermal and physical properties to develop design data is reported. Theory as to the mechanism of reinforcing the ceramic cement is extended. The most promising reinforcement and protective coating was found to be OwensCorning S-994 glass and Dow-Corning DC 805 silicone resin. Flexural strengths of 18,250 psi at room temperature and 16,400 psi at 1100 F were obtained with these materials. (Author)
