CONCEPTS FOR ON-STRUCTURE SHEAR GAGE AND ON-STRUCTURE SELF-RECORDING STRESS GAGE.

Abstract

Various concepts for the measurement of normal and tangential loads at the buried structure/soil medium interface are described. The concepts are evaluated in the light of basic criteria for load measuring devices, accuracy, and reliability under the anticipated testing environments and projected cost. A5mong the concepts explored are gages based on piezo resistivity, optical effects, magnetic effects and brittle coatings. Preliminary designs for a peak normal load magnetic gage and a variable reluctance shear gage are presented. (Author)
