Studies In Ignition, Special Report On Gun Ignition.

Abstract

The interesting studies of the Naval Proving Ground on the use of the blowout gun to simulate the interior ballistic characteristics of the standard gun with projectile, have led to speculation on the use of this device to aid in improving gun ignition. Firings in the 5''/54 blowout gun at the Naval Proving Ground allow measurement of the velocity of the wave corresponding to the burning front and of the point of origin of this wave. It is suggested that further experiments should be performed to determine the effect of primer and propellant variables on the wave velocity. The apparatus would be particularly suitable for determining the effect of using the double tube type of primer said to give essentially simultaneous venting at all points. (Author)
