THE USE OF OBJECTIVES IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS,

Abstract

This study was done to find out whether telling students what was expected of them in a very specific fashion, and also telling them how they would be evaluated, would improve their performance. The area that was selected for investigation was the mathematics portion of the Advanced Sonarman Course (C-570), given at the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare School, San Diego. For each sub-section of the course the students in the experimental class were given explicit statements of the mathematical operations and concepts that they were expected to learn. In addition, they were given the criteria that would be used to measure their learning. The performance of the experimental class was compared with that of two previous classes on two tests which covered the mathematics areas given in the course. The experimental class did perform significantly better on these two tests than the previous classes. The successful use of objectives and criteria has led the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare School to adopt this technique in the teaching of mathematics in Course C-570. (Author)
