A ONE-DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL TREATMENT OF THE TRANSITIONAL EVENTS LEADING TO DETONATION FOR DENSE HETEROGENEOUS EXPLOSIVES,

Abstract

In an attempt to obtain a general numerical one-dimensional treatment of the initiation of cast heterogeneous explosives, it is shown that a complete numerical treatment is intractable. However, by taking a phenomenological approach, a physically reasonable method of bridging the thermal conduction and the hydrodynamic regimes of the transitional phenomena is demonstrated and, by assuming a posteriori the formation of hot spots, a modified hypothesis of the transitional events is developed. The results which are obtained reproduce the experimental trends qualitatively and give an insight into the transition mechanism. (Author)
